Garage Giveaway for International Students

On September 6, international students in the Clear Lake area are invited to come to Storage Corral in Pasadena and choose FREE items of furniture and other household goods that will make their apartments more livable and comfortable while they study in the U.S.

American volunteers are needed to donate their gently-used items of furniture, appliances, linens, and other household items (no clothing, please). You may drop off your items at the Storage Corral (3655 Burke Road) between the hours of 11:00-4:00 Mon-Fri and 10:00-2:00 Sat. Tell the attendant you are donating to International Student Garage Giveaway and you will be directed to the proper storage unit.

Volunteers are also needed to provide transportation for students and/or furniture on the day of the Giveaway, Sat. Sept 6. If you can take students back and forth from their apartments, or help deliver larger items, please contact UBC's ISO team or Jeff Newpher of ISI-Houston, the organization which sponsors the annual Giveaway. (jeff.newpher@sbcglobal.net / 281-989-2589)

UHCL Students who need a ride to the Storage Corral Sept. 6 should contact UBC ISO to make arrangements.

(For Seventh-Day Adventist students, arrangements can be made to attend the Giveaway on Friday, Sept. 5. Contact us for details.)

Welcome Bags for New International Students

Through August 17, UBC is collecting practical items for Welcome Bags which will be distributed to new international students at UH-Clear Lake at the beginning of the fall semester.

Volunteers should look for the display table during weekend worship and choose the item(s) they would like to purchase. Items should be brought to the donation box at UBC no later than August 17 so that they can be sorted and distributed the following week concurrent with new student orientation at UHCL. We plan to give away 125 Welcome Bags. Cash donations are also accepted; we will use this money to purchase additional items for the bags. Email us at UBCISO@gmail.com for further details.

Summer Program for International Students!

This summer University Baptist Church is excited to offer a new program for international students and non-native English speakers.

Each Friday, beginning June 20 and ending August 8, students are invited to UBC to meet some American volunteers and practice English conversation/language skills.

Schedule:
12:00-1:00 Arrive at the church with a sack lunch and visit with other students and American volunteers.
1:00-2:00 Join in an English practice activity led by native speakers and organized by Maradee Kern, an experienced ESL teacher.

The church is within easy walking/biking distance from UHCL/UFA (about one mile). However, if you need transportation, contact us and we can arrange a ride for you.

Please invite your friends! Anyone is welcome, there's no need to register in advance, and the program is FREE. You may attend once or every week...we hope you'll give it a try!

About the Friendship Partner Program...

Are you interested in learning more about American life from families in the Clear Lake area? The University Baptist Church family would like to invite you to participate in our Friendship Partner program. During the year, we will host special events and activities for international students and American volunteers. Anyone is welcome to participate! We can also “match” you with a local family or individual and help you feel connected and involved in the community during your stay in the U.S.

Basic Facts of the Friendship Partner program:

  • We will introduce you to a compatible family or individual based on your application information.
  • We encourage Friendship Partners to meet at least once a month and have phone or email contact even more often.
  • The program is organized by University Baptist Church, a local community of Christians.

Benefits and Opportunities with the Friendship Partner program:

  • Learn about American culture and daily life by participating in some typical family events and traditions.
  • Improve your English skills by communicating with native speakers outside of the university.
  • Share your own culture with Americans--teach them about your language, customs, values, food, art, music, history, etc.
  • Get tips about practical matters like shopping, health care, traveling, moving, or banking in the U.S.
  • Enjoy your favorite hobbies with others and try new activities as well.
  • Have the chance to attend special events and visit local attractions with Clear Lake residents.
  • Feel comfortable asking any questions you may have about American culture, values, and activities.
  • Experience the feeling of family while you may be far from home or homesick.
  • Build a relationship that may last a lifetime.
